Hotels in Makkah
Makkah is the holiest city in Islam and home to the Masjid al-Haram and the Kaaba. For Umrah and Hajj, the most important decision is how close your hotel is to the Haram: a short walk lets you pray in the mosque for every salah and return to rest between prayers.
Hotels in the central area around the Clock Tower and the King Abdulaziz Gate are the closest, with some rooms overlooking the Haram. Areas such as Ibrahim Al Khalil Street and Ajyad offer a balance of distance and value, while Aziziyah and other districts further out rely on shuttle buses and are popular during Hajj.

Where to stay in Makkah
Clock Tower (Abraj Al Bait)
Directly opposite the King Abdulaziz Gate, with hotels in the towers and lobbies a few minutes from the mosque courtyard. The most convenient choice for elderly pilgrims and families, and some rooms offer views of the Kaaba.
Ajyad
Just south of the Haram, next to the Clock Tower area, with many hotels within a five- to ten-minute walk. A popular middle ground between location and value.
Ibrahim Al Khalil Street
A long street leading south-west from the Haram, lined with hotels, restaurants and shops. Hotels at the Haram end are a short walk away, while those further along often provide shuttles.
Jabal Omar
A modern development west of the Haram with newer hotels, shopping and restaurants, around five to fifteen minutes on foot from the mosque depending on the building.
Aziziyah
A residential district between the Haram and Mina, often used during Hajj. Hotels are more affordable and larger, with shuttle buses or taxis to the Haram.
Best time to visit Makkah
The cooler months from November to February are the most comfortable for performing Umrah. Ramadan, especially the last ten nights, is the busiest time of year, and Hajj season brings the highest demand. Summer is extremely hot, so pilgrims should plan the tawaf and sa’i for the early morning or late evening.
Travel tips
- Check the actual walking time to the Haram, not only the distance — hills, tunnels and crowd routes can add time.
- Book early for Ramadan and school holidays, when hotels near the Haram fill up months in advance.
- Register for Umrah and prayer at the Rawdah in Madinah through the Nusuk app, which is required by the authorities.
Frequently asked questions
Which hotels in Makkah are closest to the Haram?
The hotels in the Clock Tower complex (Abraj Al Bait) and the buildings around the King Abdulaziz Gate are the closest, with some opening almost directly onto the mosque courtyard. Hotels in Ajyad and at the start of Ibrahim Al Khalil Street are also within a short walk.
How do I get from Jeddah Airport to Makkah?
Makkah is roughly 100 km from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah. The Haramain high-speed train runs from the airport station to Makkah, and private transfers, taxis and pilgrim buses take about one to one and a half hours depending on traffic.
Can non-Muslims stay in Makkah?
No. Entry to the city of Makkah is restricted to Muslims. Non-Muslim travellers can stay in Jeddah or elsewhere in Saudi Arabia.
How many nights should I stay in Makkah for Umrah?
Many pilgrims spend four to seven nights in Makkah and a few nights in Madinah. The Umrah rites themselves can be completed in a few hours, but staying longer lets you pray in the Haram and perform additional tawaf at a comfortable pace.
Is a Haram-view room worth it?
For many pilgrims, yes — being able to see the Kaaba and hear the adhan from your room is a special experience, especially during Ramadan. If the budget is limited, a hotel within walking distance without the view still gives you easy access to every prayer.
